Obituary for Irene Jewell (Geiger) Marks

Irene Jewell (Geiger) Marks, 76 of Wellsburg, WV, passed away at 7:30 AM on Saturday October 20, 2018 at her residence, after a courageous battle against Myelodysplastic Syndrome and Leukemia.

Irene was born on October 14, 1942 in Green Sulphur Springs, WV one of six children to the late Reverend John Quinn Geiger and Velma (Huffman) Geiger.

Irene graduated from Ceredo-Kenova High School in 1960. She went on to the former, West Liberty State College to complete a Bachelor Degree in 1964 and then to Marshall University for a Master in Education. Irene taught English at Wellsburg High School and Mingo High School and Business at Steubenville High School proceeding to Brooke High School in the Vocational Business Department for 30 years. She became the Director of Business Department in 1980 and remained until her retirement in 2004. During her teaching career, Irene founded the Future Business Leaders of America Chapter at Brooke High School. She had a passion for teaching and dedicated her life to the enrichment of others.

Irene was an active member of the Warwood United Methodist Church involved in the music and leadership. In addition to the church, she was a member of Thursday Music Club, Wheeling, WV, Brooke Hills Women Golf League and PEO Philanthropic Education Organization (P.E.O.) which promotes educational opportunities for women where she served as Past President.

Many will remember Irene for her love of golf, music, traveling, reading and playing the piano; but most of all, her dedication for teaching and the pure love of family.

In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by siblings, John “Jack” Geiger Jr. and his wife, Janet, Barbara Karen Johnson and Roger Geiger.

Irene is survived by her husband of 55 years, Edward Robert Marks Jr., two children, Dr. Edward Robert Marks III, MD and his wife, Toni of Wellsburg, WV and Mary Alicia Cox and her husband, Jeff of Morgantown, WV, five grandchildren, Madeleine, Katherine and Eddie Marks and Amelia and Olivia Cox, two siblings, Mary Ellen Gilkerson and her husband, Michael of Painesville, OH, Rev. Joseph Noel Geiger and his wife, Marsha of Lewisburg, WV, a brother-in-law, George “Buck” Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Irene was truly adored by her family and friends.

Family and friends will be received on Monday, October 22, 2018 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 PM and again on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 from 10:00 until time of Funeral Service at 11:00 AM at the Chambers Funeral Home, Wellsburg, WV (304)737-3551, with her pastor, Reverend Bart Thompson and her brother, Rev. Joseph N. Geiger, officiating.

Interment will follow at Franklin Cemetery, Wellsburg, WV.
