Obituary for Karen Sue VanDyke (Thompson)

Karen Sue (Thompson) VanDyke, 65 of Follansbee, WV, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 31, 2022 at her residence.

Karen was born on September 15, 1956 in Steubenville, OH. She was the daughter of the late Dennis and Josephine (DeBarr) Thompson.

Karen was a 1974 graduate of Brooke High School where she met the Love of her Life, Michael VanDyke. The two married on September 28, 1974. Karen worked as a secretary for the Brooke County School System for numerous years and retired in 2012. Throughout her years as a secretary, she touched the lives of many students and school staff members. Karen’s genuine love for others and caring personality only strengthened the school community.

She was a devout Christian and she spent many years as a Sunday School Teacher and Youth Group Leader at the Brooke Hills Free Methodist Church. Over the past several years, she was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Steubenville, OH. She loved attending services and developed long lasting friendships with many in her church community.

In addition to her parents, Karen was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Vernon and Elizabeth Thompson.

Karen was all about her family and loved each of them unconditionally. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Michael VanDyke of Follansbee, WV, two children, Dana VanDyke and her companion, Todd DeCollo of Carlsbad, CA and Derek VanDyke and his wife, Rae Ann of Weirton, WV, two grandchildren, Madison and Hendrik VanDyke, a brother, Dewey Thompson and his wife, Joyce of Follansbee, WV, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Paul VanDyke and Marla of Vienna, WV, Joyce Rea and Chip and Jane Utz and Don, all of Follansbee, WV and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Sunday, April 3, 2022 from 4:00-7:00 PM and again on Monday, April 4, 2022 from 10:00 AM until time of Funeral Service at 11:00 AM at the James Funeral Home, Follansbee, WV (304)527-1717 with her pastor, Reverend Jason Elliott, officiating.

In lieu of Flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, C/o James Funeral Home, 1245 Main Street, Follansbee WV 26037.
