Obituary for Retired WV State Police Corporal, Michael Smith

Retired WV State Police Corporal, Michael J. Smith Sr., 67, of Wellsburg, WV, passed away at 4:45 AM on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at his residence under the care of his family with the assistance of Valley Hospice.

Michael was born on August 6, 1951 in Wheeling, WV. He was the son of the late Earl and Patty Smith.

Michael served his country proudly in the United States Air Force as a Sergeant upon returning home from service, he went on to work and retired from the WV State Police as a Corporal. Michael completed 25 years of service to the State of WV through his police and working at the WV Lottery Commission. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Steubenville, OH, and American Quarter Horse and Paint Horse Associations.

In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his son, Marine Lance Corporal Michael J. Smith Jr. KIA Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Michael is survived by his daughter, Alison M. Smith and her companion, Sean Piercy of Wellsburg, WV, best friend, Marianne Smith of Wintersville, OH , grandma, Alice Minto of Wintersville, OH, daughter-in-law, Alicia M. Smith of Follansbee, WV, three grandchildren, Elizabeth Danielle Matias, Michael James Smith III and Brayden McFarland, three sisters, Joan (Larrry) Nicholson of Wellsburg, WV, Virginia Ann (Floyd) Swiger of Florida and Dianna Lynn (Charles II ) Garner of Ohio, and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 PM, Thursday, September 6, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Chambers Funeral Home, Wellsburg, WV (304)737-3551 and again on Friday, September 7, 2018 from 11:00 AM until time of Funeral Service at 12 Noon at Grace Lutheran Church, Steubenville, OH, with Pastor Michael L. Heckathorn, officiating.

Escorted by his comrades of the WV State Police to the Interment at Kadesh Chapel, Beech Bottom, WV with Military Honors by the United States Air Force and the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad.
