Obituary for Richard E. "Dick" Smith

Richard E. “Dick” Smith, 90, longtime resident of Oak Park, IL passed away on December 22, 2022.

Richard was born August 15, 1932 in Wellsburg, WV. He was the son of the late Gale and Ida Hazel (McKitrick) Smith.

Richard went to Pittsburgh and joined the Army on March 16, 1953. His basic training was at Camp Gordon, GA and then on to Communication School at Fort Monmouth, NJ. He was assigned to the Army Signal Corps, 8037th Signal Radio Relay Company. He was sent overseas to AFFE Pentagon Camp Zama, Japan. Corporal Smith was discharged on March 16, 1955 from Fort Knox, KY, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal and the United National Service Medal. He was then transferred to the Reserves.

Richard was an avid Chicago sports fan, which he passed on to his son, Ricky. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Smith, two brothers, Herman 'Spook' Smith and Clifford 'Chip' Smith and a sister, Patricia 'Pat' Smith. Richard is survived by his son, Richard II “Ricky” Smith of Oak Park, Illinois, three brothers, Jack Smith, Thomas Smith and Charles Smith; six sisters, Dora Rae Morris, Carol Giles, Sheila Turner, Pam Griffith, Jodi Pramesa and Melissa Kemp; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Friday, January 6, 2023, 9:30 AM until time of service at 10:00 AM at Ascension Church, Oak Park, IL with Mass of Christian Burial, followed by a private interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, IL Arrangements by Cappetta Funeral Home, locally printed by Chambers Funeral Home, Wellsburg, WV
