Obituary for Rufus Dudley

Rufus Dudley, 82, of Cleveland, OH, formerly of Wellsburg, WV passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at his residence.

Rufus was born on August 6, 1936 in Wellsburg, WV. He was the son of the late Reed and Cannie (Caffee) Dudley.

Rufus was a graduate of Wellsburg High School where he was a star football player. He also played football for Lincoln High School in Wheeling, WV before integration. After graduation he worked for Magee motors and Hager’s Auto in Wellsburg. Upon being drafted, Rufus served his country as a paratrooper in the US Army. He was a painter for White Motors, owned S & D Body Shop and purchased properties to rehab and rent out. He was a hard working man who not only “smelled the flowers” but he planted them every year in his parents’ flower garden. Rufus was an avid vegetable gardener and an enthusiastic Cleveland Browns’ fan.

In addition to his parents, Rufus was preceded in death by two sisters, Dr. Carolyn Ann Darling and Barbara Jean “Bobbie” Dudley.

He was a great brother who leaves to mourn his passing four siblings, Starlon (Dolores) Dudley of Cleveland, OH, Margree Campbell, Ruth Clay and Daniel (Pamela) Dudley, all of Wellsburg, WV. He was a much loved and favorite Uncle to seven nieces and nephews, four great nieces and one great nephew, Tarita, Torrone, Timothy Clay of California, Kelly Dudley, Cleveland, OH, Freddie Darling of Texas, Amanda Dudley of Wellsburg, Daniel "DD” Dudley (Shevonne), Sherman Oaks, CA, Kennedy, Courtney and Michael Corrin of California and Saoirse Dudley of Sherman Oaks, CA and a host of friends and relatives.

Private Graveside Service will be held at Kadesh Chapel Cemetery, Beech Bottom, WV with Military Honors by the United States Army and the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad.
