Obituary for Shirley Ann "Sam" Lyke Freeland (Messenger)

Shirley Ann “Sam” (Messenger) Lyke Freeland, 74 of Mingo Junction, OH, passed away at 5:40 PM on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at Trinity Health Center, Steubenville, OH.

Shirley was born on August 19, 1945 in Jane Lew, WV. She was the daughter of the late Clarence Messenger and Leona (Sandy) Messenger.

Shirley retired as a registered nurse after working 38 years with F.A. Sunseri, MD. Many will remember Shirley for her enjoyment in her younger years of fishing and flea marketing and later in life her love of reading and watching the game show network.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her first husband, William H. Lyke, three siblings, Charley and Louis Messenger and Norma Williams.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 15 years, George Freeland of Colliers, WV, two children, Billie Jo Cammer and her husband, Thomas of Mingo Junction, OH, and Michael W. Lyke and his wife, Kathy of Hopewell, PA, five grandchildren, Jacob W. Cammer and his companion, Cindy Wells, who grandma resided with, Jared Cammer, John Zoppett III and his fiance, Hannah Grubow, Nicole Button and her husband, Qwin, and Megan D'Jovin, a great grandson, Levi Button, four sisters, Judy Bennett, Sharon Carder, Linda Hall and her husband, Tom, Jaineay Brasselle and her husband, Tom, three sisters-in-law, Debbie Messenger,Vanna Krupinksi, and Charlotte Lyke and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to niece, Penny Wagoner and friends, Donna Butler and Corma Saltsman for sharing their time with Shirley. In addition to the girls of three north for spot checks and keeping her diet coke full and to two Telemetry staff for caring and entertaining Shirley for the last weeks of her life. You did your best and very appreciated by our family.
