Obituary for Private First Class Roy Allen Henderson

Private First Class Roy Allen Henderson, 18, of Newark, OH, formerly of Fairmont, WV, died serving his country on July 27, 1950 in Anui, Republic of South Korea during the Korean War.

Roy was born on December 1, 1931 in Fairmont, WV. He was the son of the late Lester Henderson and Mamie (Hayhurst) Henderson Webb.

Roy at a young age of 18 entered the United States Army on December 1, 1949. He was then deployed to Korea during the War with the 1st Battalion, 29th Inf. Regiment, 25th Inf. Division. Roy’s battalion came under fire on July 27, 1950. From that time period until late 2015 his last known status was Missing in Action. Roy’s body has been located and identified.

He served his country paying the ultimate sacrifice so that today we have our freedoms. Roy’s dear family and his fellow Army comrades never stopped looking for him over the 65 years. They lived up to the Soldier’s creed, “I will always place the mission first. I will never accept defeat. I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade.” Roy stood proud on the battlefield as a guardian of our freedom and the American way of life. He will always be remembered as a true American Hero.

While awaiting his homecoming, Roy was preceded in death by his dedicated father and step mother, Lester and Hazel Henderson, his sorrowful mother, Mamie (Hayhurst) Henderson Webb, a caring sister, Lillian Swain and her husband, Gerald, two devoted brothers, Paul Henderson and his wife, Ann and James Henderson and his wife Hazel, a step brother, Merle Brown, and a niece, Carol Reed and her husband, Bob.

Roy will be welcomed home and remembered always by his surviving family, his dear step-sister, Frances Louis Rush of Fairmont, WV, a nephew, Robert Swain and his wife, Sharon of Wellsburg, WV, three nieces, Judy Foresha and her husband, David of Follansbee, WV, Ruth Ann Henderson of Newark, Ohio, Sharon Warfel and her husband, Mike of Oklahoma, and a nephew, Paul Henderson and his wife, Denise of Illinois.

Roy will be repatriated at a private ceremony at Pittsburgh International Airport and led home by the members of the Patriot Guard of WV, PA, Ohio and numerous other states.

A public gathering of family, friends, military comrades, and veterans to honor Roy’s life will be held on Friday, April 8, 2016 from 1:00 until time of Funeral Service at 2:00 PM at the James Funeral Home, 1245 Main Street, Follansbee, WV (304) 527-1717 with Captain Kevin Brosius, Army Military Chaplain, officiating.

Roy’s remains will be led by the Patriot Guard to his final place of rest and committal service at Highland Hills Memorial Gardens, Follansbee, WV with Military Honors by the WV Army National Guard, his fellow comrades.

The family of PFC Roy A. Henderson would like to thank the never ending service of the United States Army, the Patriot Guard, and all who helped to never forget Roy’s service and sacrifice to our great country.
