Obituary

Frances E. Ford, 102, formerly of Follansbee, WV, a resident of the Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center in Elkins, WV departed this life on September 23, 2019.

Frances was born in Follansbee WV on September 15, 1917 to Arthur and Frances Evans and resided in Follansbee until 2009. She was the youngest of six children, all of who preceded her in death. Frances was happily married to John W. Ford from 1951 until John's death in 1989.

Frances was employed by Follansbee Steel Corp. from 1937-1951, first as a sorter in the tin mill until the beginning of WWII when she became a crane operator. She operated all the cranes in the mill during the war and became involved with “Rosie the Riveter” organizations as part of the WWII 75-year anniversary celebrations. She returned to work for the Brooke County Board of Education as a food service worker from 1969 until her retirement in 1980.

Frances enjoyed working with her hands and always had a project, including ceramics, jigsaw puzzles and various other crafts. She loved to travel, visited all 48 contiguous states and had an extensive collection of salt and pepper shakers from around the world. She was a member of a pinochle club that met monthly for more than 60 years. She had a contagious smile, a wry sense of humor and was very patriotic.

Frances was a Christian by faith and was a lifelong member of the Follansbee Church of Christ. She utilized her love of crafts while teaching in the Sunday School Nursery and Vacation Bible School for many years.

She is survived by her son Edward and his wife Andrea of Beverly, WV, by her granddaughter Rebekah Ford of Baltimore, MD, and by several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who were very important to her.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday, September 26, 2019 from 9:30 AM until time of Funeral Service at 11:00 AM at the James Funeral Home, Follansbee, WV (304)527-1717 with Minister Dan Cooper, officiating.

Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery, Colliers, WV.

Mrs. Ford taught me in the nursery and thru my adolescent years at FCC. One of the most important lessons she taught me was that I was never going to be good at making crafts! She, on the other hand, made it look so easy. Through my years growing up in that church, at all of the events we had, she was ALWAYS there. Always. She was a wonderful friend to my Aunt Tot and my Aunt Fanny. In every church, there are individuals that become legacies for all the work they do in building up the body of Christ. Mrs. Ford was one of these legacies. I will never forget her... Darak Weaver
