Gene Hartman Mercer Sr., 88 of Wellsburg, W, passed away at 9:25 AM on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at his residence under the care of his family with the assistance of Amedisys Hospice.

Gene was born on January 6, 1932 in Middlebourne, WV. He was the son of the late Clyde Emil Mercer and Amanda (Lancaster) Mercer.

Gene retired from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel where he operated the crane.  He also worked on drilling water wells and building homes.  Gene was a member of Wellsburg Christian Church.  Many will remember Gene for his love of fishing, wood working, the outdoors and hunting; but most of all, for the devotion and love of his wife and family.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Victoria “Sis” Ann (Smith) Mercer, who died just 15 days ago, an infant son, Stephen E. Mercer, a son-in-law, Joseph Roth and two sisters, Lydia Grooms, Hazel and Clarence Carroll.

Gene is survived by his six children, Christina Acors and her husband, Donald of Weirton, WV, Mark Mercer and his wife, Judy of Virginia Beach, VA, Gene Mercer Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth of Virginia Beach, VA, James Mercer of Wellsburg, WV, Joyce Roth of Wheeling, WV and Matthew Mercer and his wife, Missy of Wellsburg, 13 grandchildren, Benjamin, Markie, Charnel, J.P., Angelia, James, Daniel, Alexis, Anthony, Carly, Chelsea, Brady and Cali, numerous great grandchildren,  a sister, Kathryn Carroll and her husband, Tom of Virginia Beach, VA and several nieces and nephews.

Private family viewing was held at Chambers Funeral Home, Wellsburg, WV (304)737-3551, followed by a graveside service at Franklin Cemetery with Pastor Dave Parker, officiating and Military Honors by the WV Army National Guard and the Ohio Valley Memorial Squad.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to WV Hands and Voices, C/o Chambers Funeral Home, 1030 Main Street, Wellsburg, WV.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Brooke County Senior Center and Amedisys Hospice for their support and comfort over the last months.
