I first met Lenus just a little over two years ago while ministering at the nursing home. Lenus was a faithful friend to me. From the very first time I visited him our conversations centered on God and all that the good Lord has done in our lives. He encouraged me and supported me through prayer and likewise I did (and continue) to do the same for him. Lenus was healed a few years back from severe pain. Lenus was healed one night after praying to a photo of Jesus and had prayed that the "Good Lord would take just a little bit of the pain away" and instead "He took it all away!". He took such delight in sharing his story of healing and told anyone who would listen (and even those who would not). He was always praying for others, not just us sisters, but other residents and the nursing staff as well.
After I first met Lenus and he shared this story with me I wanted to get him another photo of Jesus to hang in his room. We had one at the monastery that was going to be given away. I brought the photo with me. Lenus was extremely grateful and happy. Did he hang it in his room? Nope. He instead asked if it could be hung in the nursing home dining room so he could see it when he was eating and so others could "see" Jesus too. And there it is. The first photo of Jesus in the dining hall in forty years.
In one my last visits with Lenus, before I left, he grasped my hand. And when he did so he looked me in the eyes and said, "I love you for who you are." I felt like those were words from God to me, spoken through His instrument, Lenus. At that moment he reminded me that this is how God loves me and how He sees me. Not by what I do, what I've done or what I've failed to do - but He loves me because of who I am. Lenus sees something in me that I do not always see.
"Faithful friends are a sturdy shelter; whoever finds one finds a treasure. Faithful friends are beyond price, no amount can balance their worth. Faithful friends are life-saving medicine; those who fear God will find them." (Sirach 6:14-16)
I thank the Lord for Lenus - for Lenus’ life, example, faith, love for the Lord and his laughter.
